Sweet Honey in the Rock will present this participatory program designed to inspire, educate and empower young people through the power of song. The music is rooted in the African-American experience. It transcends any single culture with its messages of joy, love and respect for all creation in the cycle of life. “Building a Vocal Community”
free workshop presented by Dr. Ysaye Barnwell of Sweet Honey in the Rock

Barnwell will lead participants in learning in the oral tradition and singing rhythms, chants, traditional songs from Africa and the Diaspora, and songs from African American culture. She will also provide the historical, social and political context of the songs. Participants will be enriched by exploration of an African American worldview, the role of cultural and spiritual traditions and rituals, and the significance of a shared communal experience.

“Make Music Visible: Interpreting Music and More”

In this three-hour session, Childress Saxton will present strategies for interpreting music in ASL. Participants will learn how to prepare and translate the music, including abstract concepts, and how to interpret the music, including instrumental-only sections of songs.

Childress Saxton, a certified interpreter, will explore the value of song, the cultural significance of many songs, and how deaf people can be inspired by song. Deaf students will learn to express themselves in new ways that increase their confidence and their appreciation of the arts.
